Confusions in the text
[edit]I believe there are some confusing elements in the text. The text begins with stating that "Jean II de Trie" was "the first of his name". So is he Jean/John I or II?
Further it says "He succeeded his father, Mathieu". I have no specialist knowledge of these lineages but from what I can tell, Mathieu should be Johns grandson, not his father. The links in the article seem circular.
I tried to compare it with the lineages in "Geni.com", and I can't say if it's more reliable than Wikipedia, but it makes it clear why there would be confusion. There are several generations with brothers and uncles called Mathieu and Renaud. I've lined them up here. The list should be read as "Father" -> "Son". When there are two sons they continue on one line each beginning with a new "->".
Wikipedia says: (starting with oldest)
Renaud I d. 1302 (no article) -> Mathieu III d. 1344 AND 1345 (NO HEIRS) -> John I/II d. ~1300 (this article)
Geni says:
Enguerrand II "Aiguillon -> Jean I. d 1236 -> Matheiu (I) d. 1272 & Renaud (I) d.?
-> Matheiu (I) d. 1272 -> John II d. 1302 (likely this article) -> Renaud (II) d. 1318 (no male heirs)
-> Renaud (I) d.? -> Mathieu (II) d. 1315 (no male heirs) & Renaud (III) d. 1302
--> Renaud (III) d. 1302 -> Mathieu (III) d. 1344 (no male heirs), likely the correct Mathieu de Trie.
...
In summary I believe this article is for Jean II. The link to his father is wrong, it links to Matheiu III instead of Matheiu I. Likewise, in the Matheiu III article an unwritten link says his father is Renaud I, when it should be Renaud III.
I hesitate to make the edits myself since I am only relying on Geni.com here, and no primary sources. I also would like to caution that I may have made mistakes myself here as it is quite easy to mix up these names. I hope this helps make Wikipedia better. Jwzh (talk) 10:03, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
- He was John II of Trie and John I of Dammartin. The link to Mathieu is wrong. The wrong Mathieu, that is, not the wrong name. Compare fr:Jean de Trie. Srnec (talk) 20:14, 1 October 2024 (UTC)
